The Lyrid meteor shower is set to peak tonight as Earth passes through a stream of dust and debris from Comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher) during its 415-year orbit around the Sun. Beginning around 10 p.m., when Lyra rises high enough to provide more of the shower's view, expect about 10 meteors per hour under dark skies. The best viewing comes before sunrise, when Earth turns into the debris stream and when the radiant is nearly overhead. The Lyrids rise high for observers in the United States, giving them access to a larger portion of the display.
