Ethiopian Airlines is building a $12.5 billion airport in Ethiopia, set to open in 2030, with a capacity for 60 million passengers and plans to grow to 110 million passengers, more than the world's busiest airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson. The project is led by Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest carrier by fleet size, total passengers and revenue. The airline plans to invest 30% of its equity to cover the cost of the project, while the other $8 billion is yet to be secured. The airport could also tap into Africa's underused cargo capacity and handle 3.73 million tons of cargo annually. However, Landry Signé, executive director at Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, warns that the success of the airport depends on the logistics surrounding the runway. There has been controversy over its construction, which reportedly displaced over 15,000 people from over 9,000 acres of agricultural land.
