Wilderness near Truckee closed after fatal plane crash

The crash of a single-engine plane near Olympic Valley, California, has resulted in the death of the pilot, James Wholey, and the closure of a swath of national forest. The Beechcraft A36 Bonanza went down around 5:15 p.m. on March 22 near Five Lakes, near the Palisades ski area. The plane went off the radar when it was approaching Truckee Tahoe Airport and an automated crash alert was received. An aerial search located the wreckage and the pilot was found dead. The closure of the forest is currently under effect through April 7.
