49ers' John Lynch: Positive momentum on Trent Williams front
Published on March 29, 2026.
The San Francisco 49ers and star left tackle Trent Williams have been unable to agree on a reworked contract this summer. General Manager John Lynch expressed optimism about the situation, stating that good communication has been consistent. This comes after the 49ers declined to pay out the $10 million option bonus Williams was due due to. This decision boosted Williams' 2026 salary cap number to around $47 million. Williams, who turns 38 on July 19 and has expressed a desire to play until he's 40, is set to enter next season without any guaranteed money or years left on his deal beyond 2026. The 49ers have not actively looked at Williams' departure, but have signed swing tackle Vederian Lowe and free agent Austen Pleasants.
