Why Lebanon should join the International Criminal Court

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is the only international body capable of prosecuting those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Lebanon. Lebanon's joining the court would give the ICC jurisdiction over Israeli atrocities committed on Lebanese territory, as well as those committed by any Lebanese citizen, including Hezbollah. This could also help Lebanon address repeated Israeli invasions into its territory, which is not only a crime under international law but also an international crime. While states have expressed support for Lebanon in response to Israeli aggression, accountability for atrocities has not been provided. The ICC could also provide Lebanese citizens with an independent forum to focus their accountability efforts on.
