The Anchorage School District has begun laying off dozens of employees and moving hundreds of others to different positions or schools next year. This follows a failure by voters to approve Proposition 9, a special tax levy that would have funded 80 additional classroom teachers. The district has eliminated 500 full-time positions and absorbed 150 positions through vacancies and resignations. Another 73 employees from schools slated for closure will move to the schools receiving those students. District Superintendent Jharrett Bryantt committed to listening to concerns from voters who did not support the school bond or special levy. He emphasized the need to regain the trust of Anchorage residents and the district's structural deficit for the 2027-28 school year will be around $40 million.
