Denver City Council makes annual bison donation permanent
Published on April 20, 2026.
The City and County of Denver has made its annual donation of surplus buffalo to American Indian Tribes and American Indian nonprofits permanent after a unanimous vote by the City Council. The bison donation has been part of a conservation program for over a century, with the City and Country of Denver caring for one of the oldest municipal bison herds in the nation. The City Council ended auctioning off bison bison in 2021 and launched a structured donation program for tribal nations. Since 2008, Denver Parks has provided 174 bison to various American Indian tribes. Since then, the bison are more than just a gift from Denver, they are a restoration of both culture and religion.
