North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, is the first hospital to use Abbott's Traumatic Brain Injury test (i-Stat), a 15-minute blood test that can quickly assess a patient for a potential TBI for those 18 years and older. The test detects two brain-specific proteins, GFAP and UCH-L1, which can be detected in the blood for up to 24 hours after an injury. The FDA has granted clearance in 2021 for the test to be used for patients with suspected mild TBIs at their bedside. This rapid turnaround to assess for brain injuries is a game-changer, according to Chidubem Iloabachie, associate chair of Emergency Medicine at NSUH.
