The Gophers football team used Paul Bunyan’s Axe as motivation during their spring football practice, using it as a key event to enhance the intensity of the Gophers-Wisconsin rivalry. The team's third spring practice session was held on March 28, allowing for installation of offensive and defensive plays and technique development, but also included a mini-game for a trophy. The trophy was the actual trophy the team won in a 17-7 victory over the Badgers in November, marking the fourth time in five years. Coach P.J. Fleck used the idea of creating a competition to encourage more intensity in the team's rivalry with Wisconsin. The Gophers offensive players wear white jerseys while the defensive players wear maroon. Players wearing orange jerseys were awarded to players who have made an impact in the previous practice, particularly through leadership. The orange jerseys are a contrast with last year's half-maroon, half-white jersey made for safety Koi Perich. Last week, Gophers running back Darius Taylor revealed that he's hired a personal chef to help focus on nutrition and avoiding injuries, and quarterback Drake Lindsey said he is using this focus on weight training and nutrition, and about 10 players are using the personal chef for the team.
