Hundreds of toxic mothballs were found on a Florida beach just days before a protected migratory bird species, Black Skimmer, is set to nest in the area. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to a call about hundreds of mothballs near a condominium on St. Pete Beach on April 20. The mothballs contain chemicals that can be toxic to birds and other wildlife, and placement of them on the beach is harmful as wildlife can ingest them. Local residents cleaned up the beach the day the report of the mothballs came in. The FWC has not specified a motive for the incident, but it is against the law to interfere with nesting of a protected species.
