Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has announced that $4.4 million in city and philanthropic funding will be used to enhance protections for local immigrants. The funding will focus on providing legal services for those facing deportation amid the federal crackdown. The city has partnered with three philanthropic organizations, the Boston Foundation, Barr Foundation, and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, to create an initial investment of $3.1 million towards services for immigrants living in the city illegally or with legal status. This funding follows a 21% increase in the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement budget over the past four years. The announcement comes after the Boston Police Department ignored federal detainer requests regarding criminal charges.
