Talks between Mexico and the United States are progressing positively, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum. The first official bilateral negotiating round for the review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will be held on May 25, 2026. This comes after a meeting between Mexico's top trade negotiators, U.K. Ambassador to Mexico Ron Johnson, Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, Finance Minister Édgar Amador Zamora and other officials. The three North American trade partners must decide if they want to extend their free trade pact for an additional 16 years, to 2042. Mexico's primary complaint is that President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on a range of Mexican goods, including steel, aluminum, and vehicles. However, Greer stated that the US.S. is more concerned about its trade deficit with China than its deficit with Mexico.
