The South Pars natural gas field, which came under attack by Israel, is an energy lifeline for Iran. The attack prompted Iran to target energy infrastructure in other Middle East countries in response. The Iran-led Iran war has caused a significant energy shock to the global economy by disrupting most exports of crude oil and liquefied natural gas through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has also attacked ships and key export facilities in its Persian Gulf neighbors, putting upward pressure on energy prices. The South Pars field is the main source of Iran's domestic energy, with 80% of this coming from South Pars. The country relies heavily on gas to produce electricity and heat homes, and is the fourth-largest consumer of natural gas in the world, behind the U.S., China, and Russia.
