Federal agency approves concept for Trump's plan for a Triumphal Arch in Washington

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, appointed by President Donald Trump, has approved the design concept for the Triumphal Arch, a plan to be built at an entrance to the nation's capital. The arch, which would stand 250 feet tall (76 meters), would be topped by a Lady Liberty-like figure and flanked by two eagles. The commission's vice chairman, architect James McCrery II, preferred the arch without the figure and eagles on top, reducing its height by about 80 feet (24.4 meters). The commission will review updated designs for all three projects at a future meeting before taking any final votes. At least three people have voiced opposition to the arch, largely due to its size.
