Tesla is facing up to $14.5 billion in lawsuits, including Autopilot wrongful death suits, securities fraud and racial discrimination. The company's "hardcore litigation department" and "corporate puffery" defense strategy have failed to stem the tide. The situation is accelerating, with the potential for the most dangerous lawsuits still to come. Tesla's exposure estimates range from a conservative $2.7 billion to high-end at $15 billion. The firm's legal strategy has been criticized as being creative, arguing that Musk's public statements about Autobilot and "Full Self-Driving" were not taken seriously. Since the Benavides v. Tesla verdict, Tesla has quietly settled at least four additional Autopail crash lawsuits rather than facing another jury. The pipeline of future lawsuits is also significantly larger.
