Minnesota Legislature eyeing fixes for outdated county IT systems

The Minnesota Legislature is considering addressing outdated county IT systems, which may lead to social services fraud. The technology used by counties to administer Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and other key public benefit programs is embarrassing and potentially contributing to fraud. Some lawmakers have proposed incorporating technology infrastructure into a borrowing package known for paving roads and fixing bridges. However, others, like Sen. Scott Dibble, DFL-Minneapolis, argue that the current system is inadequate for digital infrastructure. Dibble has proposed a bill to amend the state constitution to make clear that information technology improvements are worthy of state bonding. However some lawmakers, like Dibble's caucus leader, Erin Murphy, have voiced opposition to this idea.
