Lawmakers have accused the Department of Justice of rushing the indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPC), citing whistle-blower reports. The accusations were lodged against the SPC, which has been criticized by President Donald Trump and other Republicans for labeling right-wing organizations as hate groups. The Democrats argue that the indictment amounts to a misuse of prosecutorial power to attack civil society. They also demand information from the Acting US Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, who brought the case.
