The opening of the 2026 Major League Baseball season will feature several firsts, including the earliest official Opening Day in baseball history and the first-ever game streamed on Netflix. The ABS system uses high-speed cameras to track pitch's exact location and create a 3D model of pitch's trajectory, which is then compared to batter's individualized strike zone. The system is accurate to within 0.25 inches and quick enough to catch an Aroldis Chapman 103-mph fastball. Despite this, human umpires are still largely in charge of the game, making mistakes on around 17 or 18 pitches a game. However, this shift could lead to a breakdown in the balance of human and machine authority.
