Serena Sato, CEO and president of SERRV International, a nonprofit organization that imports handmade, fair trade products from over 20 countries, has written that tariffs have significantly impacted her business bottom line. Last year, tariffs cost her small business $204,098.28 and another $17,033.89, a sum of nearly $222,000 taken directly out of a small business, which could have been used to grow, support artisans, and create jobs in Maryland. The tariffs also affected decisions at home, leaving open positions unfilled and leading to a decline in sales. The Supreme Court's recent decision overturning the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs gave an immediate relief to small businesses. However, before the court's decision was announced, the president announced plans for new tariffs of 10-15%. Sato argues that Congress should block new tariffs and quickly refunded the tariffs already paid.
