Alaska lawmakers have approved a $450 million budget increase dependent on higher oil prices. The new spending plan includes funding for transportation projects, disaster response, fire suppression, higher education scholarships, and agency operations. However, the Legislature failed to approve a draw from the Constitutional Budget Reserve, a state savings account that can only be accessed with support from three-quarters of lawmakers in the House and Senate. The bill includes $70 million in state transportation spending, $75 million in disaster relief funds, $130 million to replenish the Higher Education Investment Fund, and $77 million for agency operations, including Medicaid, Department of Corrections, and the Division of Public Assistance. Some lawmakers, including Sen. Robert Myers, argued that the agency operations funding indicated that lawmakers were not adequately funding all departments through the budgeting process.
