The use of dirty diapers in Japan is being transformed into new ones thanks to a new recycling initiative in Kagoshima Prefecture, which separates and shreds the core material for reuse, saving millions of tons of landfill-bound waste. The city of Shibushi and Osaki, Japan, recycle 80% of household waste, four-times the national average. The company Unicharm pioneered its diaper recycling method, where residents collect their discarded diapers if their names are written on the bags to ensure accountability. The process uses ozone, a sterilizing gas, to clean and deodorize the pulp to ensure it passes sanitary requirements. The country is aiming for 100 cities and towns to be recycling diapers by 2030.
