A recent federal court ruling has made it easier for Colorado's political parties to lock out the state's largest group of voters out of primary elections. This decision could lead to minority rule over our election process, which would be a major loss for democracy. The ruling invalidates the threshold for a major party to opt out of the primaries, which requires 75% of central committee members to support it. This has led to the urgent need for Colorado to adopt a truly open primary. As of January, unaffiliated voters are the majority of active registered voters in the state, making it essential for an open system to allow voters to vote for any candidate regardless of party affiliation. The author suggests that parties should instead stop building barriers and instead adopt a voting system that reflects the majority.
