Moorhead's Hopperstad Stave Church in Moorhead, North Dakota, is set to reopen after a 2025 renovation following a significant renovation. The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County will mark the reopening of the church on April 7 with an evening of candlelight tours, live music and storytelling. The church, a full-scale replica of the 900-year-old Norwegian Hoppersstad Stav Church in Vik, Norway, was built between 1996 and 2001 and features a 72-foot tall structure supported by 27-foot-tall pine columns (staves) and covered with 24,000 wooden shingles. Guy Paulson, a retired U.S. Department of Agriculture research scientist and longtime woodcarver, led the effort to honor his Norwegian heritage and donated $200,000 to the project. The event will also feature candle light tours and music, transporting guests back to a time when communities marked the changing seasons by walking the land and blessing the land.
