The steamship Milwaukee, which sank in 1886 after colliding with another ship on Lake Michigan, was discovered remarkably intact by the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association. The team found the wreck after a two-day search using sonar imaging and a remotely operated vehicle. The collision was caused by a sudden fog and resulted in the sinking of the Milwaukee. The ship hit the bottom of the lake 40 miles from Holland, Michigan, in 360 feet of water. The association has made it a mission to recover as many lost ships in the lake. The Milwaukee was commissioned in 1868 to join the Northern Transportation Company of Ohio, and was purchased by W. W. Ellsworth in 1881 and converted into a larger ship for wide cargo before being purchased by Lyman Gates Mason in 1883.
