The Supreme Court of Puerto Rico has dismissed an ethics complaint against two attorneys, stating that they submitted a court filing with false case citations that they believe were generated by artificial intelligence (AI). The lawyers had already been fined $1,000 by the Court of First Instance and had withdrawn from the underlying case and apologized. The court stated that a repeat of this misconduct could result in suspension from the practice of law. The dispute began when the lawyers filed a brief citing nonexistent or inaccurately described precedents, which opposition counsel flagged and asked for sanctions. The Supreme Court ruled that lawyers must verify material produced by AI technology and act with competence and diligence.
