Sargent Shriver's 1969 memoir, "We Called It a War," was left in a drawer until its discovery in 2018. The book, which was published by Loyola University’s Apprentice House Press, holds lessons for today's political climate and family dynamics, including dealing with their cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., currently the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Shriver, who died in 2011 at age 95, had married Eunice Kennedy and directed the Peace Corps from 1960 to 1964. He also created numerous programs to combat poverty, including the Head Start early childhood education program, the Job Corps, and Legal Services. Despite being decades ago, the book still stands as a blueprint for how to create, test and measure programs to ensure their effectiveness.
