Valve's SteamOS operating system has been successful in challenging Microsoft's dominance in PC gaming, with a rise in Linux's share from under 1% to over 5% between April 2021. This shift comes after a period where over 92% of PCs in the Steam Hardware Survey ran some version of Windows compared to just over 96% five years ago, ten years ago ten years, and 15 years before, a testament to Microsoft's ubiquity. The success of SteamOS, which also includes official support for third-party gaming handhelds and other hardware, has enabled Valve to build on its success. The company's timing coincided with Microsoft's move from Windows 10 to Windows 11, an OS with a reputation for being irritating and having higher system requirements.
