Researchers from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden have found that two common painkillers, aspirin and lidocaine, significantly reduced escape responses in Norway lobsters when they were electrically shocked. This indicates that these medicines were mutating the crustaceans' pain processing. The study suggests that painkillers developed for humans also work on Norway lobster. The researchers have urged the use of these drugs in experiments to find the most humane way to treat and kill crustaceons. In response, Norway, New Zealand, Austria, and parts of Australia have all banned the boiling of lobsters.
