Clinton County, Indiana, has an acting sheriff following the resignation of Sheriff Richard Kelly due to criminal indictments. Kelly resigned as part of a plea agreement in a 2022 criminal indictment related to his wife's appointment as a jail matron. His wife, Ashley Kelly, pleaded guilty to the same charges and the couple was accused of failing to file the proper paperwork for Ashley's appointment. The county Republican Party chairman, Jordan Brewer, is leading the search for a new sheriff. Chief Deputy Shawn Mayfield will temporarily serve as acting sheriff. The Kellys still face charges in a criminal indictment in Marion County and are facing separate charges in Hamilton County.
