Archaeologists in Switzerland have discovered a full loaf of Roman bread during excavations near the site of the Roman legionary camp at Vindonissa. The object was initially found in the surrounding soil and taken to a restoration laboratory in Basel, where further analysis is planned for its composition. The discovery could help determine when the site developed from a temporary base into a permanent legionary base. The remains of the bread and other items found during the dig suggest that it may be from the earliest phase of the military camp, predating the 1st Century AD.
