We’re scientists. We use AI. And we fear it.

Professor Xavier Prochaska and David Haussler, two computer science and biology professors from UC Santa Cruz and the Future of Life Institute, respectively, express their fears that artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially replace them and erode the foundation of the university system and significance of human life. They argue that AI has already increased our productivity manyfold, but with great power comes great potential for harm. Only a few select companies currently own the most advanced AI, they are racing ahead with little regulation. They advocate for measures such as mandatory accounting and audit-triggering caps on computational power used to train and operate the mostadvanced AI systems. They also advocate for the creation of tiered AI safety regulation that scales oversight to risk, including stringent pre-approval of comprehensive security plans, and for the development of safe and beneficial AI. They warn that in the race to AI dominance, systems intended to help us could instead replace us, erasing the foundations of our universities and upending the meaning of human lives.
