UK dairy farmers are on the verge of leaving business if milk prices continue to fall due to a glut in supply. Dairy farmers are expecting to lose money from their 200 pedigree Holstein cows this year. The number of dairy producers has dropped by 20% since 2019 to about 7,000. The price paid by processors to many UK dairy farmers has fallen by up to 15 pence per litre (ppl), or about 40%, since October 2025. UK supply exceeds the capacity of processors and outpacing consumer demand. The drop in dairy prices has led to calls for EU emergency support, with Italy asking for farmers to cut production and storage. The British dairy sector is worth more than 6 billion pounds a year and contributes to the UK economy by just 20% annually.
