A bill to create an "Office of Inspector General" in the Minnesota Legislature is headed to Gov. Tim Walz for his signature. The bill author, Sen. Heather Gustafson, DFL-Vadnais Heights, and Republican co-author, Sen.-Michael Kreun, passed the bill by a wide margin in the House. Critics argue that the new office will duplicate existing agency inspector generals' work and will cost an estimated $3 to $6 million in start-up costs, with another $11 to $12 million annually to pay for about 40 full-time employees. The cost of a new law enforcement unit within the inspector general’s office could add another $15 million per year.
