Members of the Jacksonville Immigrant Rights Alliance (JIRA) gathered for a vigil to commemorate those who have died in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. The group alleges that 14 people have already died in ICE custody this year alone, and that 2026 is expected to be the deadliest year for immigrant detainees since 2004. The vigil focused on two local tragedies, including the death of 18-year-old Royer Perez Jimenez. Advocates are urging Jacksonville residents to speak out against these partnerships and demand an end to them. In response to these deaths, ICE maintains that it prioritizes the health and safety of all aliens in its custody.
