A Louisiana senator has proposed a plan to give state police a larger role within the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Sen. Patrick McMath argues that DCFS needs law enforcement on the front end, particularly for its 24-hour hotline and investigations into neglect and abuse. He believes that having state police run the call center would result in one less child dying, which is more than enough reason to make these changes. The proposal also involves coordinating with local law enforcement to respond more rapidly.
