The use of foreign steel in the White House ballroom is seen as a snub to Minnesota miners, as hundreds of Iron Range miners have been laid off in the past year. The steel used will not originate in the Iron Range, where hundreds of steelworkers have lost their jobs. However, it will be donated by ArcelorMittal, a Luxembourg-based firm that is the world's second-largest steelmaker, which will donate tens of millions of dollars of European-made steel for the controversial $400 million ballroom. Despite this, some miners believe that using foreign steel should be made in America. State Sen. Grant Hauschild, DFL-Hermantown, criticised the decision, but did not disclose the source of the donated steel. The Iron Range continues to suffer from layoffs, with many finding other jobs elsewhere and struggling to maintain their homes in the mines.
