Inside Cuyahoga jail’s fight against overdoses — and how drugs still get in

The Cuyahoga County jail has seen a decrease in overdose deaths since 2021, with 15 deaths, six of which were drug-related. The county has beefed up security and increased resources to help inmates with addiction. However, the number of non-fatal overdoses varies, and MetroHealth, which provides medical care to inmates, did not provide specific numbers on non-Fatal overdoses. Despite these decreases, officials continue to call the ambulance for suspected overdoses. The case of recently indicted jail guard Miguel Caraballo and three others accused of smuggling drugs into the jail leads to federal charges. The sheriff maintains that some overdose calls are false alarms or when guards aren't sure if it's an overdose.
