Some local leaders are calling for the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) to be dismantled following a scathing audit. The audit revealed that KCRHA ran a negative cash balance as large as $44.7 million and lost $4.26 million due to administrative overspending, including interest payments that cannot be recovered. The findings have been met with calls from Seattle City Councilmember Maritza Rivera and King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski, who believe the model can't survive. KCRHHA, which was funded primarily by Seattle, King County and overseen by a regional governing board, launched in 2021 as a regional approach to a fragmented homelessness system. However, the audit found no evidence of large-scale fraud and said problems were built up over years.
