A young Sumatran orangutan has been filmed using a human-made canopy bridge to cross a public road in North Sumatra, making it the first documented instance of the critically endangered species doing so. The bridge spans the Lagan-Pagindar road, which has been a difficult barrier for local wildlife since its upgrade in 2024. This could potentially damage the population numbers of the species, which are already on the verge of extinction. Conservationists installed the rope bridges to connect the forest canopy with its fractured parts, and the only ones using it were smaller animals like squirrels, bukkakes, and Gibbons.
