KCTV5 has found that Kansas City, Missouri, sends thousands of taxpayers to collections over the city's 1% earnings tax every year, but the city does not track down any errors. The issue comes as voters are being asked to renew the city’s 1%. Daniel Speir, a lifelong resident of the city, supports the city and has been targeted twice by the system used to collect the tax twice in the past. He claims that he received bogus notices of assessment from the city claiming he owed hundreds of dollars for the 2020 tax year and later received a notice of assessment stating he owed more than $600 for tax year 2022. KCTV5 also requested records from city's finance and law departments, showing a sharp increase in recent years in which earnings tax accounts were sent to collections.
