The primary races in Texas were significantly different from previous years, particularly on the Democrats' side. After Gov. Greg Abbott signed the GOP redistricted map into law in August, a three-judge court in El Paso ruled it was "racially gerrymandered". However, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the map to be used for the 2026 midterms following an emergency appeal from Abbott. Democrats continued to file in every federal and state race, marking the first time either party has done so in modern Texas history. In Travis County, turnout was higher than any midterm dating back to 1994, according to the Democratic Party Chair Doug Greco. The current political climate also contributed to increased voter participation. Local campaign strategist Jim Wick noted that 30% of voters had never participated in a primary before and that this impacted other races on the ballot.
