Nicholas Ivan Kling, a homeless man with a history of mental illness, was arrested at a Portland market after shouting racial slurs and threatening people with a hammer. A store employee reported that he was threatened with the hammer after preventing him from leaving the store. Kling was later identified as having schizophrenia and was arraigned on charges of first-degree bias crime, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, and criminal mischief.
