Australian koala-detecting dog Bear, a hero of the Australian bush fires, has announced his retirement. The dog, who made headlines around the world as a master sniffer for injured koalas, made headlines during the bushfires during the so-called "Black Summer" which saw at least 60,000 koalars killed, injured, displaced or traumatized. Bear was one of the first dogs in Australia to be trained by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and a team from the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) to track down live koalalas by the smell of their fur. He also received various awards for his bravery, including a documentary and children's book dedicated to him. Despite his retirement, Bear's legacy will continue through the next generation of detection dogs following in his footsteps.
