A research team from Vanderbilt University has found that excessive salt consumption can lead to heart failure. The study followed over 25,000 adults in the southeastern United States for nearly a decade, with an average of about 4,269 milligrams of sodium per day, well above the recommended 2,300 milligrames. This level of intake was linked to a 15 percent higher risk of developing heart failure, regardless of other factors such as cholesterol, calorie intake, or physical activity. The researchers suggest that even modest reductions in sodium intake can prevent 6.6 percent of new heart failure cases over a decade. However, many participants were living in lower-income communities with limited access to fresh food and no realistic alternatives to high-sodium diets.
