Michter's Distillery has announced the release of its US*1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Kentucky Whiskey, marking the first time the distillery has offered its sour mash expression at barrel strength. The distillery's Sour Mash Whiskey is a mix of corn, rye and malted barley and does not meet the 51% grain requirement for a single category like bourbon or rye. Despite its name, the distiller stated that the whiskey is not sour but rich with delicious notes of toffee and stone fruit. The new barrel strength version, which averages 111.5 proof (55.75% ABV) will carry a suggested retail price of $120 per 750-milliliter bottle in the United States.
