Lewis stranding offers clues to pilot whales' deep water lives

More than 50 long-finned whales died after they got into difficulty in Tolsta Bay in 2023, according to a new study by the University of the Netherlands. The study identified "chemical signatures" on the whales' skin indicating they were healthy and likely to have been feeding near deep waters. This discovery is the first direct evidence that long-formed pilot whales use these habitats as important seasonal feeding grounds, which may place them at risk of stranding.
