Amazon is set to discontinue supporting older Kindle technologies by May 20, 2026, affecting devices released in 2012 and earlier. These devices have been supported for at least 14 years and some as long as 18 years. The affected devices include Kindle 1st Generation (2007) and 2nd Generation (2009), Kindle DX (2009) and DX Graphite (2010), Kindle 4 (2011), Kindle Touch (2011) and Kindle 5 (2012), and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen. The announcement has sparked outrage among bookworms, with some claiming that their devices are still functional and accessible through the free Kindle app and Kindle for Web.
