A pair of American burrowing owls have returned to Florida after a year-long adventure that involved them stowing away on a Royal Caribbean cruise to Spain. The owls were found hanging out in a densely landscaped area of the 18-deck Allure of the Seas and spent a year at a rehabilitation center in Spain before returning to Miami in February. They are currently in quarantine by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The reason for their presence on the cruise ship is not clear. Burrowing owl is a Florida-designated threatened species and is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This is not the first instance of such an occurrence on cruise ships.
