The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are occurring later than expected, potentially extending into April. The agency stated that RSV cases are typically mild but severe for young children and seniors, leading to severe illness. The disease can result in hospitalization that could involve a ventilator. Emergency department visits and hospitalizations for RSV are highest among infants and children less than 4 years old. There are currently no treatments specifically indicated for RSVS, but preventive treatments have been approved in recent years. The “cicada” variant of COVID-19, which has had more mutations in the spike protein, is also causing concern as it evades immune protection more effectively. The strain was dubbed a “super flu” in the media, but doctors believe it was just another strain of the influenza virus.
