Clean energy finds a foothold in New Mexico despite federal pullback

Despite efforts by the Trump administration to hamstring the renewable energy industry in New Mexico, companies and utilities continue to develop clean-energy projects in the state. Despite a federal judge's decision to cancel federal grants based on the location of the recipient, Kit Carson Electric Cooperative was informed two years later that the Department of Energy was canceling the $15 million federal grant for its project. This was one of 321 such terminations of grants for energy projects across the nation. Despite these setbacks, New Mexico continues to thrive in renewable energy, with renewable energy supplying 50% of the state's electricity generation in 2024 and 2025. The state also passed a mandate in 2019 to remove fossil fuel power plants from the system by 2045. The Trump bill, passed in July, rolled back major incentives passed under the Inflation Reduction Act, which former President Joe Biden championed.
